Film Review ‘Outlist’ dir Dustin Lance Black & ‘The Battle of amFAR’ documentary dirs Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman double bill

When AIDS strikes, two very different women Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor and research scientist Dr. Mathilde Krim join forces to create America’s first AIDS research foundation. Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman the film chronicles the organization’s history and continuing importance in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

This wonderful documentary short is an eye-opening exposition of how two powerhouse women came together to change the lives of many thousands of people and to help find a way to stop HIV/AIDS being a death sentence for many.

Capturing the hard work and fight of both Krim and Taylor, the uphill battle they faced at first,all to ensure there would be funding to research and understand the virus and to try and find a cure of one of the most prevalent killers of 25-44 year olds.

On the other hand, The Outlist is a much more playful, yet with serious a undertone, look at out LGBT people in high profile positions. The film explores their decisions to come out or be out in the public eye, and the impact it’s had on their careers through a series of simple of talking heads. Familiar and not so familiar faces offer an in-depth look at their experiences and share personal stories with grace, laughter and tears in the hope that their steps can make things better for future generations.
